Throughout the fall quarter the BMES website will undergo changes that will aid members in better understanding what our goal here at BMES at UCR is all about! The current plan is to have the site restored to full functionality by the end of the quarter, where members old and new will be able to stay up to date on events, projects and plans for the year. Make sure to follow us on instagram @bmesatucr in the meantime to stay updated!
We recognize that now is an uncertain and stressful time for many following the tragic deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and so many others due to the racial injustices against the African American community. It is during these troubling times that BMES at UC Riverside refuses to stay silent regarding the police brutality and systematic racism occurring in our country. We stand firmly against racism towards the African-American community and sympathize with those demanding that their voices be heard in order to change the direction of our nation’s future. We, as individuals, can bring about the change that is needed for a better future. Whether you decide to protest, petition, or show support in the many other ways that you can, make sure to stay safe and take care of your mental, physical and emotional health. We love and support all those who are speaking out against social injustice and encourage everyone who feels the same to do so as well. Black lives matter. Officer election applications for the 2020-2021 officer board are now extended until Thursday, February 20th!
To learn about each position, check out this document for individual position descriptions or reach out to each officer for any specific questions. Being a part of the BMES officer board is a wonderful opportunity to get involved with leadership and learn transferable soft skills, such as teamwork and event planning. By leading BMES, you can also give back to your community of bioengineers and help cultivate the next generation of engineers. Application can be found here, and email your resume to [email protected]. Best of luck, and we hope to see your applications soon! Thank you everyone for supporting BMES this past year! BMES won the Organization of the Year Award and the Best Website Award out of the BCOE organizations, and was nominated for Best End of the Year Report, Best Technical Development, and Best Professional Development. It is an honor to be considered for so many achievements and be chosen for several. We could not have done this without the leadership of the past year's officers, the support of the members, and the guidance of staff, faculty, and sponsors. We hope that you will continue to support the new officers and the growth of the organization! “Our goals for the organization this year was to be more dynamic and active with not only our members, but also within the Bourns College of Engineering. We were able to do that this year by hosting a variety of events and activites to engage the engineering community, such as BioHack, technical workshops, study jams and socials, company tours, fundraisers, and a diverse list of general meetings. The hard work, time, and dedication that the officers of BMES put in this year to execute everything successfully can be seen with the “Organization of the Year” award given to us out of the 19 organizations within the Bourns College of Engineering. This is the first time that BMES has won such a prestigious award and I could not be more proud! I am humbled to have had the opportunity to lead such an amazing group of student leaders as well as to have been apart of such a huge organizational change within BMES to reach our goals and go beyond our expectations! At the end of the day, praise and acclaim do not need to validate the work of my officers. Each and every one of the offiers had the internal drive to provide the most to our general members and so we were able give back to our community of bioengineers at UC Riverside. With that, I hope as President I was able to set an example for future student leaders of BMES and I am confident they will be able to achieve this and more in the future years!” - Jayapriya Vengadesan, 2018-2019 President
This past year, we've held two Study Jams with the Engineering Honor Society, Tau Beta Pi, to promote academic development and community among the engineering student body. Our first Study Jam was in Winter quarter, serving up donuts paired with hot coffee. The second Study Jam was this quarter, just this past Tuesday, where we provided bagels and cream cheese with orange juice. We had fantastic attendance to both events, with a lot of positive feedback for providing a large space with relaxing study music and tasty refreshments. Thanks for attending the Study Jams and making them a success! We hope to keep holding these events in the future, so keep an eye out in the next year for the next Jam! Any feedback is appreciated. On Wednesday, April 24th, 20 BMES members went to Edwards Lifesciences Irvine Headquarters and went on a tour of the facilities, had lunch on the campus, and interacted with Edwards employees as well as UCR alumni. At the facilities, the students got to observe their R&D, product development, and quality control departments. In addition, they were able to have a hands on experience with the biomaterial Edwards used to build their heart valve products. During and after lunch, the students were able to interact with current Edwards employees of varying backgrounds and positions, the majority of whom were UCR alumni, while enjoying a great view of the beautiful campus of Edwards in Irvine. Thank you to Edwards Lifesciences for this unique and unforgettable opportunity! "Going on the Edwards tour inspired me to keep on building my career and find out what truly inspires me and my passion." - Spencer Szu, Junior Bioengineering Student
Registration for the Edwards Lifesciences company tour and industry panel is still open! This will be a great opportunity to tour its headquarters and learn more about the company from industry professional engineers.
Due to limited spots there is a $15 security deposit which will be refunded when present at the tour! Food will also be provided. They went undefeated the entire tournament, even beating our very own BMES team. Thank you to everyone who came to compete and to watch, we had an amazing number of teams and people participating! We hope to see your team again in next year's tournament! Thank you to Applied Medical for guiding us on a tour of the facilities last Thursday, February 28th! Our members greatly enjoyed getting to interact first-hand with the medical devices and see the manufacturing process. Every quarter BMES hosts at least one company tour at a biomedical company in Southern California for paid members to sign-up and attend. Please keep an eye out for our next tour in the spring! |
